 Chronic fatigue syndrome

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a complex disorder characterized by extreme fatigue lasting at least six months.

Those affected often find that their symptoms intensify with physical or mental exertion and do not fully improve with rest.

The exact cause of ME/CFS remains unclear, with numerous theories suggesting that a combination of factors may trigger the condition.

Diagnosing ME/CFS is not straightforward, as there is no single test available. Instead, a series of medical evaluations may be necessary to exclude other health issues that present similar symptoms. The focus of treatment typically revolves around managing and alleviating symptoms.

Symptoms:-

Symptoms of ME/CFS can differ widely from individual to individual and may fluctuate in severity from day to day. Alongside profound fatigue, individuals may experience:

- Severe exhaustion following physical or mental activities.

- Memory or cognitive difficulties.

- Dizziness, particularly when standing up from a seated or lying position.

- Muscle and joint pain.

- Disturbed sleep that doesn't feel rejuvenating.

In some cases, people may also report headaches, sore throats, and tenderness in lymph nodes located in the neck or armpits. Increased sensitivity to light, sound, smells, food, and medications can also be present.

When to Consult a Doctor?

Given that fatigue is a common symptom of various health issues, it is advisable to consult a doctor if you experience persistent or excessive fatigue.

Causes:-

The specific cause of ME/CFS is still undetermined. However, it may involve a combination of factors, such as:

- Genetics,:-

There seems to be a familial link, suggesting some individuals may have a genetic predisposition.

- Infections:-

Symptoms may emerge following recovery from a viral or bacterial infection.

- Physical or emotional trauma:

Many report the onset of symptoms following an injury, surgery, or significant emotional distress.

- Energy metabolism issues :

Some individuals experience difficulties in converting fats and sugars into usable energy.

Risk Factors:

The likelihood of developing ME/CFS can be influenced by several factors, including:

- Age: While ME/CFS can affect anyone, it predominantly occurs in young to middle-aged adults.

- Sex،: Women are diagnosed with ME/CFS more frequently than men, possibly due to a greater propensity to report symptoms.

-Other medical conditions: A history of complex medical issues, such as fibromyalgia or postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, may increase the risk.

Complications of chronic fatigue syndrome:

Symptoms of ME/CFS can be unpredictable and are often triggered by physical activity or emotional stress, making it challenging for individuals to maintain regular work routines or manage daily self-care activities.

At times, people may be too fatigued to leave their beds, and some might require the assistance of a wheelchair for mobility.
